Girl, 11, dies after falling from ride at Drayton Manor

A SCHOOLGIRL has been airlifted to hospital after she fell from Drayton Manor's Splash Canyon ride into the water.

The girl was on a school trip when she fell from Splash Canyon water ride at Drayton Manor, Staffordshire, BBC News reported.

She was flown by air ambulance to Birmingham Children's Hospital but later died.

The theme park's website promises "a wild ride" with "fast-flowing rapids".

Emergency crews dashed to the park following reports that a child had fallen from a water ride at around 2.25pm this afternoon (9 May).

"Our staff were alerted that an 11 year old girl had entered the water".

An incident on Alton Towers' Smiler ride in June 2015 led to two teenagers losing a leg and left 14 others injured.

"Unfortunately, shortly after arrival at hospital the girl passed away".

Police Superintendent Carl Ratcliffe said: "Specially-trained officers are supporting the girl's family at this hard time".

A spokesman for Drayton Manor said: "Splash Canyon has been closed following an incident this afternoon".

The officer added the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had been informed of the incident. "The first resource was on scene within seven minutes".

It has a maximum capacity of 126 people - 21 boats with six people in each - and a minimum height of 0.9m.

Visitors are now being turned away from the park, a spokesman said.

It comes after two men and two women died at Dreamworld in Australia past year when a similar ride, the "Thunder River Rapids" ride apparently malfunctioned.
