Padres acquire Matt Szczur from Cubs

The Cubs officially parted ways with Matt Szczur, sending the outfielder to San Diego for minor league pitcher Justin Hancock. Hancock, 26, is 24-29 with a 3.91 ERA in 116 games, 90 starts, in seven minor league seasons in the Padres organization. Making 15 regular-season appearances thus far into the 2017 campaign, he received just 19 at-bats en route to a.211 batting average alongside three RBI and a.273 on-base percentage. Szczur was out of options and with the Cubs needing bullpen arms for the Yankees series, was designated for assignment.

He was originally selected by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. He reached base safely in a career-best 21 consecutive games last season from August 14-Sept. 4.

3B Kris Bryant was in the lineup in right field Monday before the game was rained out. Heyward is hitting.253 with three homers and 17 RBIs. This year for San Antonio, Hancock has appeared in 10 games, all in relief, and was 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA.
