Group linked to NSA spy leaks threatens sale of new tech secrets

Shadow Brokers, the group that previously leaked the tools responsible for the global ransomware attack that followed, has threatened that it would soon release more Windows related exploits and the associated malware.

This EternalBlue vulnerability was actually first discovered by the United States security agency NSA, but the agency's hacking arsenal was stolen by the Shadow Brokers, and now the hacker group responsible for this theft has written a blogpost.

Members are being promised exploits for web browsers, routers, smartphones, operating systems (notably including Windows 10), compromised data from banks and Swift providers and, in a odd twist, stolen network information from Russian, Chinese, Iranian and North Korean nuclear missile programs.

Claiming that they have more such tools which can exploit vulnerabilities in newer operating systems, Shadow Brokers said that the tools would be released on a subscription-wise basis.

In a blog post, the group said that the data would be available to anyone willing to pay a subscription fee. It is believed that hacking tools that belong to the NSA were leaked online and were used to build into WannaCry ransomware, also known as WannaCrypt, which has ensnared up to 300,000 computers in more than 150 countries.

Shadow Brokers claims to have about 75 per cent of the US cyber-arsenal, says Sean Dillon, senior security analyst at RiskSense. Shadow Brokers hinted that this problem could be prevented if NSA would pay for all the tools.

"The Equation Group are our nation's top hackers", he says, referring to the group which Shadow Brokers claims to have pilfered a stockpile of exploits and tools.

The Shadow Brokers' post included its first commentary on WannaCry.

Smith also noted that a fundamental rethinking of tactics in addressing cybersecurity issues is in order. Businesses and networks across Asia are coping with the first wave of WannaCry during their workweek.

According to the report, the millions of Windows 10 users worldwide may also be affected.

The post explains Shadow Brokers main motivation in its activities as a competition of sorts, pitting itself against the NSA.

Dillon believes that once somebody gets data dump from the hackers, the exploits would likely become public.
