Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging

Authorities say Cornell hanged himself in a Detroit hotel room Wednesday following a Soundgarden concert.

"Seattle's son, Chris Cornell, has passed away", DJ John Richards told listeners.

The singer had posted about the show on Twitter just eight hours before his death was announced, reported BuzzFeed News.

Cornell, 52, was in Detroit performing with Soundgarden, which had embarked on a US tour in April, CNN reports.

Cornell was now on tour with Soundgarden and had performed that night in Detroit. "We are investigating it as a possible suicide, but we need to wait on the medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death". Soundgarden has not commented on Cornell's death.

However, my favorite memory of Cornell was his song "You Know My Name" from the James Bond movie Casino Royale.

Cornell played a seminal role in the origins of grunge music, founding Soundgarden in 1984 with Kim Thayil and Hiro Yamamoto. Their most popular songs, "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman", both won Grammys. The medical examiner has ruled his death a suicide.

Cornell formed Audioslave in 2001 with former Rage Against The Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk.

Cornell was named "Rock's Greatest Singer" by Guitar World magazine and was ranked 9th on Rolling Stone's "Best Lead Singers of All Time". While Nirvana may have been the band that broke grunge into the mainstream, Soundgarden was the first to sign onto a major label.

In 2010, Soundgarden reformed and released King Animal two years later.

In April, Cornell visited CBS This Morning and appeared to be in high spirits, and even teased a new Soundgarden album. He released the single "The Promise" in March on iTunes, with all proceeds going to the International Rescue Committee, a global humanitarian aid, relief, and development non-governmental organization.
