The Election Commission of India is all set for a public test of its Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) amid criticism from some political parties from the opposition over its vulnerability to tampering.

The Election Commission will on Saturday hold a demonstration on the working of EVMs and VVPATs to allay fears that these can be tampered with in favour of a particular candidate/party.

The AAP had welcomed the poll panel's announcement of holding an EVM challenge but insisted on the "hackathon".

He said parties can try and prove that EVMs can be tampered with even under strict technical and administrative safeguards as applicable during elections. The EC has however, at all times, maintained that the EVMs used in all elections can not be tampered with or manipulated.

After several opposition parties urged the EC to revert to ballot paper system, the parliamentary committee had summoned senior officials of the poll panel to discuss issues related to the reliability of EVMs.

While the BJP, CPI, CPI (M), AIADMK, DMK, NCP and JD (U) clearly supported the use of EVMs, provided paper trail machines are attached to it, BSP, AAP, Trinamool Congress said the paper ballot system was better and more transparent.
