Former US Rep. Anthony Weiner faces charges in sexting case

"Today, former Congressman Anthony Weiner admitted and pled guilty to sending sexually explicit images and directions to engage in sexual conduct to a girl he knew to be 15 years old", acting US Attorney Joon H. Kim of the Southern District of NY said in a statement.

The probe into his exchanges with the teenage girl, however, also helped upend the final days of the 2016 USA presidential campaign.

In a release, acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon Kim called Weiner's conduct "reprehensible", saying he sent sexually explicit images and directions to engage in sexual conduct to a girl he knew was 15. He signed a plea agreement with prosecutors in which he agreed not to appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months in prison. A likely result of the plea is that Mr. Weiner would end up as a registered sex offender, although a final determination has yet to be made, the person added.

Weiner cried in court as he apologized to the 15-year-old girl at the heart of the sexting case, The Associated Press reported.
