North Korea links nuclear advances to hostile US policy

The U.S.is looking ahead toward a decisive battleground in its bid to destroy the Islamic State group, even as U.S. -backed local forces must still finish the fight for the extremists' two main strongholds in Iraq and Syria.

US President Donald Trump told South Korea's presidential envoy that he was willing to make peace through engagement with North Korea if conditions are right, South Korean media reported on Thursday.

"I said there is a controversy about procedural problems in the course of the deployment, and I talked about the need for this issue to be discussed at the National Assembly", Hong told reporters at the Korean War Veterans Memorial after paying tribute to US soldiers who served during the 1950-53 Korean War.

North Korea has made no secret of the fact that it is working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the USA mainland and has ignored calls to rein in its nuclear and missile programs, even from China, its lone major ally.

"As everybody knows, the Americans have gestured (toward) dialogue", North Korea's Deputy U.N. Ambassador Kim In Ryong told reporters on Friday.

The U.S. troop presence in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War, is primarily to guard against the North Korean threat.

Kim accused the council of playing "to the tune of the USA again" and protested the Trump administration's demand for countries to choose allegiance between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, his country's official name.

Trump has called for an immediate halt to North Korea's missile and nuclear tests and U.S. Disarmament Ambassador Robert Wood said on Tuesday that China's leverage was key and Beijing could do more.

If the United States "persists in anti-DPRK sanctions without understanding its rival, the (Trump) administration will have to take full responsibility for the ensuing catastrophic consequences", he warned.
