Comey to testify before Senate intel committee

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, said he expects Comey to "shed light on issues critical to this Committee's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election".

Spicer offered a new explanation for the firing, saying that Trump had been trying to improve relations with Russia-and Comey got in the way.

Committee chairman Senator Richard Burr said he wants to hear from Mr Comey on his role in the development of the USA intelligence agencies' assessment that Russian Federation interfered in last year's presidential elections.

"I hope that former Director Comey's testimony will help answer some of the questions that have arisen since Director Comey was so suddenly dismissed by the President".

"There is no reason he can't testify before both the Intelligence and Judiciary committees, particularly given that the Judiciary committee is the FBI's primary oversight committee with broad jurisdiction over federal law enforcement, FISA and the nomination of the next FBI director", the senators said.

Wherever Comey testifies, Americans deserve to hear what he has to say, Warner said.

In an Oval Office meeting with senior Russian officials last week, Trump called Comey a "nut job" and said firing the intelligence chief had relieved "great pressure" on him, The New York Times reported.

The public will soon hear from recently fired FBI Director James Comey.

"If these White House documents in fact exist memorializing the President's statements to the Russians, the Oversight Committee needs to obtain copies immediately", he continued. The White House is disputing a report that President Donald Trump asked C.

Chaffetz has scheduled a hearing on Comey's firing next Wednesday, although it's not clear if Comey will testify.

Comey, who had been leading his agency's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign and possible collusion with Trump's campaign, was sacked by Trump on May 10 in an abrupt move that sent shock waves throughout the world.

Comey has been at the heart of the scandals enveloping the White House after Trump fired him last week while he was leading the FBI's investigation into Russia's election-year meddling and contact with the Trump campaign.

Citing two unidentified sources, CNN reported that White House lawyers have begun researching impeachment procedures in an effort to prepare for what officials still believe is a distant possibility that Trump could have to fend off attempts to remove him from office.

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings called Trump's reported comment about Comey "astonishing and extremely troubling".

House Democrats who have been pressing for a special counsel to examine possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign are welcoming word from the Justice Department that former FBI director Robert Mueller will lead the investigation.

"Chairman (Jason) Chaffetz should request these White House documents today and have his subpoena pen ready- just as he did earlier this week with the memos written by Director Comey". According to Comey's memo, the president had made his feelings known on the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn regarding his own ties to Russian Federation. It says the president then told Russia's foreign minister and ambassador that he "faced great pressure because of Russian Federation".

In a short statement, Mueller says, "I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability".
