Notre Dame Grads Walk Out During Mike Pence's Commencement Speech

Pence, the former governor of IN, was invited to speak after Notre Dame students and faculty protested the prospect of President Donald Trump being invited to become the seventh US president to give the commencement address. Pence previously served as governor of IN, where he became known for championing rightwing policies against climate action, abortion access, and immigration, among other issues.

There were also students who walked out of the commencement during Pence's address.

Over 100 students who were graduating from Notre Dame University in IN reportedly walked out of their graduation ceremony on Sunday just as Vice President Mike Pence took the stage to deliver his commencement address, USA Today reports.

The protest action was planned ahead of the ceremony, with activist group We Stand For saying Pence's policies as vice president and as former IN governor targeted marginalized people on the basis of their religion, skin color or sexual orientation.

The walkout was planned in protest at what organizers called Pence's policies that "have marginalized our vulnerable sisters and brothers for their religion, skin color, or sexual orientation".

"One thing is for sure", student Maddie McGovern told CBS News.

Liz Hynes said that Pence represented the kind of intolerance Notre Dame had sought to eliminate.

The university's president, Rev. John Jenkins, said prior to the event that he respected the students' right to peaceful protest.
