Obama Officials Subpoenaed in Unmasking Probe

Conaway and Schiff announced in a joint statement on Wednesday that they had issued subpoenas to Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, and to Michael Cohen, the president's personal lawyer.

Nunes, in April, recused himself from driving the board's examination concerning suspected Russian intruding in the 2016 presidential race taking after a mystery visit he paid to White House authorities, however he holds subpoena control.

"That hasn't happened yet, and I think it's a violation of the recusal by the chairman, much in the same way I thought the Attorney-General's recusal should have covered whether he participated at all in the firing of the person leading the FBI investigation", Schiff continued.

Congressional sources said the subpoenas requested the intelligence agencies to provide details of any requests made by two top Obama administration officials and the former CIA director to "unmask" the names of Trump campaign advisers inadvertently captured in top-secret foreign communications intercepts.

Some reports claimed Nunes issued the subpoenas without consulting Democrats on the panel, but the aide said that was "absolutely false", and that they were consulted beforehand.

Committee Democrats have accused Nunes of trying to distract from the Russian Federation investigation, citing him recusing himself from the probe in April amid questions about his disclosure of classified information.

The aides maintain Nunes failed to consult with Democrats when he subpoenaed the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency (NSA).

"If he recused himself on subjects, Russia, then he shouldn't have access to documents relating to subject, Russia, and he shouldn't be issuing separate subpoenas attaching them to a bipartisan subpoenas that were issued this week", Pelosi said Friday.

The four Russia-oriented subpoenas were all requested by Schiff, and are duplicative of subpoenas issued by the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to Fox News.

Democrats have questioned if Nunes should be involved in the investigation at all.

Spokespeople for both Nunes and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the committee's ranking members, declined to comment when asked by Business Insider if the committee had requested the unmaskings cited by the Washington Post.

The Maryland and NY compounds were seized under the Obama administration in December as part of a larger action over what the former president said was Russian involvement in hacking political groups in the November 8 United States presidential election.

The Senate Intelligence Committee said on Thursday it would hear from Comey, who was sacked by Trump on May 9, first in an open session and then behind closed doors, which would afford senators a chance to discuss classified information. But Democrats have argued that Nunes should transfer subpoena power in the Russian Federation probe to Rep. Conaway. He said the onus was on Ryan to remove him as chairman of the intelligence committee, which would strip his subpoena power.
