Gunman shoots United States congressman, police at baseball practice

Special agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey are being hailed as heroes for taking down the gunman who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and several others at a baseball practice. He was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.

Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign past year. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", Sanders said.

Two law enforcement sources told CNN the shooter, who is in police custody, has been taken to a hospital. The popular and gregarious lawmaker is known for his love of baseball and handed out commemorative bats when he secured the job of House whip several years ago.

"It's been reported that Representative Scalise, the House Whip, was shot during the attack, as were two courageous members of the Capitol Police force and others, including a staffer".

Hodgkinson apparently wrote many letters to the editor of his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen of them between 2010 and 2012.

He said the attack had lasted for at least 10 minutes, adding: "He had a lot of ammo".
