President Donald Trump says the assailant in the congressional shooting has died from his injuries.

Hodgkinson was 66 years old, according to multiple sources online. The gunman was taken into custody and later died of his injuries.

"I think it would have been a really gruesome day, so having the Capitol Police there really saved lives today; I think there's no question about that".

"A killing field", U.S. Senator Rand Paul said in a televised interview, describing the scene in Arlington, Virginia.

"We knew they were here and we knew who they were", Nathan said. A helicopter arrived to medevac at least one victim.

Mr Sanders said he denounced the violence "in the strongest possible terms".

Authorities would only say that Hodgkinson had likely been in the Alexandria area since March, and had been living out of his vehicle. Both of them hit the ground when the gunfire erupted.

Congressional baseball teams will wear LSU gear to honor Scalise
Joe Barton, R-Texas, recounted their harrowing experiences in television interviews Wednesday morning, saying U.S. Davis said the congressional game was a great demonstration that Democrats and Republicans could still get along.

At several points on Tuesday, Trump had labeled congressional Democrats as "obstructionists", lambasting them for opposing health-care and tax-overhaul legislation that he and his team are writing with congressional Republicans.

MedStar Washington said in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon that Representative Steve Scalise "was critically injured and remains in critical condition".

Three officers from the Capitol Hill force were on the scene, two of them assigned to Scalise because of his position in House leadership. "He is grateful for the courageous actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders and colleagues", his office said in a statement.

SC congressman Jeff Duncan said the suspect had asked him whether Republicans or Democrats were practising, before shots rang out.

Brooks told CNN that during batting practice he heard a "bam" and then a quick succession of shots and saw the gunman shooting through the holes in a chain link fence.

He said a gunfight had ensued between the shooter and the congressmen's police security detail, who were armed with pistols. "We didn't think some insane person was going to come shoot them".

The Capitol Police were directing their fire at the opposite dugout, over by third base, Brooks said.

Texas Representative Roger Williams, who coaches the GOP team, said that one of his aides, Zack Barth, was shot, but "is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery".

US congressman Scalise survives gun attack in Virginia
Before entering Congress, he was a politician in Louisiana for eight years. "I heard a bang, and I thought it sounded like a gun". I'm grateful for the heroism of the Capitol Police officers who stopped this shooter and saved countless lives.

Scalise, a lobbyist, a congressional staffer and two Capitol Police officers were injured.

"America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this bad shooting", the President said.

Bishop described those on the field as "sitting ducks" in the shooting that went on for approximately 10 minutes.

"The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely". We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. And as the political rhetoric becomes shriller, many members of Congress said they are receiving more threats, by email and by phone.

Members of Congress were practicing for a game that was scheduled for Thursday night at Nationals Park. Pitting members of one party against another, the contest supports charities ranging from the Boys and Girls Clubs to the Washington Literacy Center.

Duncan, who was just about to leave the practice field, said he "asked me if the team practicing was a Democrat or Republican team".

"He was just very calm".
