The gunman who shot a top GOP congressman and several other people Wednesday at a baseball practice outside the nation's capital had a long history of lashing out at Republicans and recently frightened a neighbor by firing a rifle into a field behind his IL home. Sanders said he had been informed that Hodgkinson had volunteered on his presidential campaign. Sanders released a statement on Wednesday saying he was "sickened by this despicable act".

The Vermont senator said real change can only be achieved "through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values". Two Capitol Police officers, Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who are members of Scalise's security team, were wounded.

Scalise, who was shot in the hip, was also taken to hospital where he is now recovering from surgery.

Court records show that Hodgkinson had two traffic tickets dismissed in 2011. She said he had not been working while in Virginia, and was expected to return to IL in the coming days.

The Washington Post was the first to report Hodgkinson's identity.
