Trump Responds to Obstruction of Justice Investigation

The move by special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Trump's conduct marks a major turning point in the almost year-old investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, the daily said in the report on Wednesday night.

Aides for Donald Trump think the president "shot himself in the foot" by firing James Comey and ultimately triggering the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller, the Daily Beast reports.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) asked Rosenstein if he has seen evidence for "good cause" to remove Mueller, whom he appointed last month after Comey's firing. "I think the best vindication for the president is to let the investigation go on independently and thoroughly".

Given that as Federal Bureau of Investigation director Comey was overseeing the probe into Russian Federation, and its possible collusion with the Trump team, the firing has led to questions about potential obstruction of justice.

The special counsel also plans to interview Rick Ledgett, who recently retired as the deputy director of the NSA, the person added. It's unclear whether the president could override those rules and order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

A spokesman for Mr Mueller declined to comment.

"When I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said "You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should've won", Mr Trump told NBC. Comey confirmed that he provided those assurances in testimony he gave to the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8.
