McIlroy, Day try to make up ground, make cut at US Open

But under sunny skies on Thursday, Erin Hills looked more friend than foe with 44 golfers breaking par to set a record for the opening round of a U.S. Open.

Erin - England's Paul Casey looked to reel in Rickie Fowler at the top of the US Open leaderboard here Friday as the second round got under way. None has ever won a major, and neither have the next 14 players behind them.

"I've got a busy summer, so I'm excited to play a lot of golf".

Now he'll have to go home and try to decipher what went wrong and, just like McIlroy, gear up for the next major, the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July.

He just didn't make any birdies.

"You won't get a better day for scoring", Johnson said wistfully during the long walk to sign his card. He loved Erin Hills, a course with wide fairways between the knee-high fescue that he figured would allow him to attack.

"Having a win this year at Honda, being in contention at majors in the past, and having The PLAYERS win has definitely done a lot for me", Fowler said.

Anger mounts over London fire
Hospitals treated 74 people, of whom 18 remain in a critical condition. Police said on Friday that 30 people were confirmed to have died.

Fowler is atop the leaderboard following a 7-under 65 that included seven birdies and no bogeys.

"It is always cool to be part of some sort of history in golf", Fowler said.

"I'm ready to be up there (in the final round on Sunday)", Fowler said.

McIlroy and Jason Day never recovered from theirs.

The world number two, who earlier in the week suggested players unable to find the fairways should "pack their bags", is now contemplating an early exit following a second-round 71.

Brendan Steele hits a drive on the fifth hole during the second round of the U.S. Open golf tournament Friday, June 16, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

Casey started the second round just one shot behind Rickie Fowler, and he tied Fowler briefly with a birdie on the par-4 11th hole before dropping a shot on the 12th.

Lakers are working out Markelle Fultz after all
Philadelphia's 2018 unprotected first-round pick that was acquired from the Lakers has been part of the discussions, sources said. With an All-Star point guard in Isaiah Thomas already, the Celtics would be better suited adding a frontcourt player ideally.

"I'm feeling really, really good about this golf course". "I thought walking on to the par-3 13th with the front left pin, I thought they could at least give us one tee box up but that's probably too nice to expect out of the USGA, that's a PGA Tour thing to do".

The opening round was without Phil Mickelson for the first time since 1993. But more storms were in the forecast for Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon, so there's not much chance of Erin Hills getting firm, fast and scary.

Airsign, the company managing the blimp said the pilot was being treated for injuries "but is expected to be ok".

"The golf course has got plenty of moisture in it", Justin Rose said after his 72. Brian Harman, Brooks Koepka (KEHP'-kuh) and Tommy Fleetwood are at 5-under. He was 100 feet away for birdie on No. 6 and burned the edge of the cup on that one, except that it ran by some 7 feet and he three-putted for bogey. He chopped that one out above the ridge of the green and three-putted for double bogey. "So I did a really good job of staying present, staying focused on the next shot".

Day shot a 75 for a two-day total of 10-over 154, ending at 17 the longest active streak of making the cut in the majors. Length wasn't the issue.

But heavy rain, which has softened greens and made fairways more forgiving, leveled the playing field dramatically.

McIlroy missed from five feet at the 10th - his opening hole - and dropped a shot at the 12th after misjudging a chip from just off the green.
