New York Times sues FBI to get notes of Comey-Trump talks

At the time, Trump said he was going to fire Comey regardless of Rosenstein's memo and that Russian Federation was on my mind. "Witch Hunt", Trump tweeted on Friday morning.

The White House confirmed that Mr Mueller was among the candidates Mr Trump interviewed to replace Mr Comey.

"We could be talking about Cuba".

His assumption roughly echoes the RNC talking points issued about the Washington Post report, which allege that the obstruction charge is just a cover for the lack of evidence of collusion.

Malcolm, who worked for Trump's FBI director pick, Chris Wray, when Wray was head of the DOJ's criminal division, spoke after a Washington Post report said Mueller's investigation has now widened to determine whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., right, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., left, listen as Attorney General Jeff Sessions testifies before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence about his role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the investigation into contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story", Trump tweeted.

Some of his ire is aimed at Mr Rosenstein and investigative special counsel Robert Mueller, both of whom the president believes are biased against him, associates say.

Mr Mueller's investigation appeared to be reaching a broadening circle of current and former officials.

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has privately acknowledged he may need to recuse himself from matters relating to the Russian Federation probe, given that he could become a potential witness in the investigation, ABC News reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources.

"Whether you're a supporter of the president or an opponent of the president, you ought to want Mueller to get the truth and get to the truth quickly", he said.

Day shot a 75 for a two-day total of 10-over 154, ending at 17 the longest active streak of making the cut in the majors. But heavy rain, which has softened greens and made fairways more forgiving, leveled the playing field dramatically.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel shortly after Comey's firing. Mr. Comey told the Intelligence Committee he never considered yielding to Mr. Trump's implied threat, and Mr. Trump subsequently fired him. Trump tweeted. "Witch Hunt".

An hour later he followed up with: "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Trump's private legal team also suggested that the Federal Bureau of Investigation deliberately leaked the information that the Special Counsel was expanding his probe to cover obstruction of justice charges, calling it "outrageous, inexcusable, and illegal".

It wasn't immediately clear who Trump was referring to in the tweet, but it was nearly certainly Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Mr. Mueller has reportedly already scheduled interviews with several senior intelligence officials.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeted that Mueller is the tip "of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency". "The Department of Justice has a long-established policy to neither confirm nor deny such allegations", the statement read. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.
