President Donald Trump said Thursday that wounded GOP Congressman Steve Scalise is "in some trouble" but "he's going to be OK, we hope", offering the assessment as a shaken U.S. House gaveled back into session a day after the shooting of Scalise and others at a baseball field. According to the hospital, he sustained a single shot to his left hip, with the bullet traveling across his pelvis causing bone fractures, internal organ injury and severe bleeding.

MedSTAR hospital has not issued an update on Scalise's condition last night when they said he was in critical but stable condition.

The doctor said Scalise was in shock and near death because of extensive blood loss when he arrived at the hospital by helicopter Wednesday.

Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

The rifle-wielding attacker - James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill. - died after being wounded by Capitol Police.

Democrats victorious in charity contest
More than $1 million has been raised for Congressional Sports for Charity so far, the game's organizers announced . Representatives on both teams made a decision to go forward with the game, which got underway at 7 p.m.

Aides to Ryan, R-Wis., confirmed the speaker had visited Scalise at the hospital but declined to provide details of the encounter. Sanchez said in the previous 14 years she's played, the game averaged about 15,000 in ticket sales.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events".

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., said he will be at third base Thursday even though the gunman, identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as James Hodgkinson, approached him just before he opened fire, asking if the team practicing "was Democrats or Republicans". The money raised from Thursday's game will go to four charities: The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, The Capitol Police fund, The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and The Washington Literacy Center.

The House has returned to business after a gunman fired at a baseball practice, critically injuring a top Republican lawmaker and wounding several others.

It came the morning after Scalise was honored at the charity baseball game where he was supposed to play second base for the House Republican team.

Jury clears Minnesota police officer of killing black motorist
The officer involved in the shooting of Philando Castile has been acquitted of all charges, leaving the victim's family enraged. Mr Yanez testified that he feared for his life when Mr Castile grabbed for his firearm, even though he was told not to.

Earlier Friday, Trump said during an event in Miami that Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" in the surprise attack in Alexandria, Virginia. "But you have long since earned my respect, and you deserve to be heard, and you are an honorable individual".

"I know Steve and I know that he is a fighter", Rep. Cedric Richmond said, "And whether that fight is for two weeks, two months, two years, we know he will fight all the way to the end".

Members of both parties said they needed to soften rhetorical attacks, if only to set a better example for a public that seems increasingly divided into hostile political camps. It's a sentiment lawmakers frequently express after mass shootings or terrorist attacks, only to see their sharp oratorical elbows gradually return.

"It could've been Democrats but Steve was the prime target". However, one person was not at the game: President Donald Trump.

The shooting prompted talk of improving security for lawmakers, most of whom are unaccompanied by officers in their normal day-to-day pursuits.
