Bette Midler Shuts It Down During Tonys Acceptance Speech

Bette Midler stole the show at last night's Tony Awards in NY, where she won the "Best Actress in a Musical" prize for her role in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway.

The Oscar victor, who scored his first Tony Award back in 1991, kicked off the show with an original number inspired by tracks from the Best Musical nominees Dear Evan Hansen, Groundhog Day, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, and Come From Away, while he also donned a dress and turban to portray Sunset Boulevard's lead character, Norma Desmond. Oslo performer Michael Aronov won the Tony Award for best featured actor in a play, while Gavin Creel of Hello, Dolly! won best featured actor in a musical.

Later in the speech, Midler spoke about the Hello, Dolly! in its current form and how it fits in to the current political climate - the musical was nominated for 10 awards and won the award for Best Musical Revival.

Other awards went to Laurie Metcalf for her role in a newly written sequel to A Doll's House and to Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon for her supporting role in The Little Foxes.

The boisterous "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812", which had 12 nominations, ended up winning just two technical awards, for best set and lighting.

Heading into Sunday's awards, "Come From Away" was up for seven Tonys, including best musical.

"Come From Away", about Canadians from Newfoundland who provided refuge to almost 7,000 airline passengers on September 11, 2001 when United States air space closed, also won one Tony for best direction of a musical.

Unlike the Oscars from this past year, the only drama we saw at the Tony Awards was on the stage during the actual performances from some of Broadway's best last night.

"The View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg joined Spacey onstage to offer him advice about helming the show, and the duo engaged in tongue-in-cheek banter with a nod to Newfoundland. Thank you to the Tony voters, many of whom I've actually dated...

Midler received an honorary Tony Award back in 1974 for her contribution to Broadway, but this is the icon's first award in an acting category. Some six million Americans watched the Tony Awards on television on Sunday, down sharply from last year's televised ceremony when pop culture juggernaut Hamilton dominated the show.

Then Spacey, returning to the stage as House Of Cards character Frank Underwood, told his on-screen wife Robin Wright that they should go.

In his acceptance speech, Ashley paid tribute to his own creative team and the real-life residents who inspired the inspiring musical.
