Trump lawyer says President isn't under investigation, despite tweets

And earlier this week, Donald Trump himself had tweeted that he was under investigation.

A member of the president's outside legal team said Sunday that Donald Trump is not under investigation, days after Trump tweeted about being the target of a "witch hunt".

Mueller, the special counsel named by the US Justice Department to probe the Russia matter, is investigating whether anyone associated with Trump or his campaign had any illegal dealings with Russian officials or others with ties to the Kremlin.

The president, who is spending his first weekend at the presidential Camp David retreat in Maryland, tweeted Sunday morning that his "agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt". In other words, it appears Trump, at least on Friday, made the assumption the Washington Post's report is correct, but he didn't really have all the information.

But Sekulow claimed the president wasn't referring to an actual investigation in the message, but instead a news report about one.

As for a Trump tweet on Friday - "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

"He takes the action that they also, by the way, recommended".

During her visit - which lasted less than an hour - she also spoke to volunteers and community leaders at St Clement's Church. Rydon, the lead contractor on the renovation, has said that it complied with all the necessary fire and safety regulations.

"Sir, you've just said two times that he's being investigated", Wallace said.

Trump's tweet, however, explicitly says he is under investigation and calls that investigation a "witch hunt". "Because the special counsel, under the special counsel regulations, reports still to the Department of Justice, not an independent counsel", Sekulow said.

"But you're his attorney, and you're saying the president, when he said that, was not accurate?"

Sekulow told Wallace that Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey last month was "based on numerous events, including recommendations from his attorney general and the deputy attorney general's office". "Number one, there is a serious constitutional issue here". Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has expansive powers to probe any matters that develop from his initial investigation.

'Let me be clear, the president is not under investigation. King said the "collusion, the cooperation aspect of the investigation is not over".

"Now my sources are telling me that he's begun some preliminary planning, plans to talk to some people in the administration, but he has not made that momentous decision to go for a full-scale investigation", he said on ABC's "This Week".

'I think you're reading more into the tweet than what's there, ' the lawyer said.

The filings reflect the president's investments, assets, income, liabilities and other holdings from January 2016 to April 2017. Trump broke a modern precedent when he refused to release his tax returns during both his campaign and presidency so far.

"Okay, well good, we're in agreement", Wallace said.

Sekulow stressed repeatedly that Trump is not under investigation.

He added that he could not "imagine a scenario" where Trump would be under investigation and not be aware of it. But it outlines no requirement of notification, particularly while prosecutors are still gathering evidence. Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a vocal ally of Trump, is also slated to make an appearance.

But Sekulow said he has not yet determined whether such a session would take place with Mueller or as part of ongoing congressional investigations into Russian meddling in the election.

Trump is under pressure to reveal whether he has any tape recordings of private conversations with Comey.

In an interview with Chuck Todd on NBC News' "Meet the Press," Sekulow adamantly declared Trump is not under investigation.
