Trump lawyer: The president is not under investigation for obstruction
"You're asking me to read people's minds".
"There has been no notification from the special counsel's office that the president is under investigation. That's the constitutional threshold issue", Sekulow said. "Actually, what I'm trying to get is a straight answer out of you".
In a heated interview on "Fox News Sunday", Trump attorney Jay Sekulow insisted - as he did on the other Sunday political talk shows - that the president was not under criminal investigation, despite reporting from The Washington Post and the president's own tweet that suggested he was a target of the investigation.
"We're in agreement then", Wallace said. "You don't know whether there's an investigation".
Jay Sekulow, one of the attorneys the president has retained to represent him in the investigation, told John Dickerson on "Face the Nation" that the president is not under investigation. "The president can not be investigated, certainly can not be found liable, for engaging in an activity he clearly has powers to do under the Constitution".
"When I chose to [fire Comey], I said to myself, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story", Trump told NBC News' Lester Holt.
Trump tweetstorm slams Russian Federation investigation
This was the week the investigation of Russia's involvement in the 2016 election reached the Oval Office - and Trump himself. Mr Trump was criticised for the tweet by the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dianne Feinstein.
The president has directed some of his frustration at Rosenstein and Mueller. He said Trump's statement on Twitter Friday was specifically in response to a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.
"If we want to put all this behind us, let's find out what happened, put it out there, and let's not undermine the credibility of the investigation, and so my view on it is that is the best thing that could happen for the president and for the country", he told CNN.
But Sekulow maintained the president was not speaking literally.
"The Washington Post issued a story that had five anonymous sources, which they never identified what agencies those sources originated out of".
"That response on social media was in response to the Washington Post piece", Sekulow told CNN's Tapper.
He continued, "Let me be clear here, as it has since the beginning, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction". Marco Rubio said Sunday that he does not expect Trump to seek to fire them.
Trump owes lenders at least US$315m, disclosure shows
The filings reflect the president's investments, assets, income, liabilities and other holdings from January 2016 to April 2017. Trump broke a modern precedent when he refused to release his tax returns during both his campaign and presidency so far.
"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"
"I will leave it there", said Todd, ending the segment. The president fired back over Twitter and at a news conference, claiming that some of the things Comey said weren't true.
Sekulow responded that the president made the final decision on Comey's firing, but it was "a collaborative and. a very thorough process" with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Rosenstein.
"The fact that [Trump] hasn't received a letter doesn't mean he's not the subject of an investigation", he said.
"Witch Hunt", Trump said in a tweet on Friday morning. "And as far as that goes, I'd say we're 20 percent into it", he said.
"Nothing has changed" since Comey informed the president that he was not being personally investigated, he said.
