A search and rescue mission to find seven USA sailors missing after an American destroyer collided with a merchant ship in waters off Japan has ended after bodies were found.

"As search and rescue crews gained access to the spaces that were damaged during the collision this morning, the missing sailors were located", the us 7th Fleet said in a statement. They are now being transferred to Naval Hospital Yokosuka where they will be identified.

A USA destroyer has returned to port after a collision with a Philippine-flagged cargo ship off the coast of Japan badly damaged the vessel and left seven sailors missing.

Search and rescue workers found the bodies inside the USS Fitzgerald after it returned to port at the Yokosuka Naval Base south of Tokyo, and water was pumped out of flooded areas on the crushed starboard side of the ship.

It had been taking on water, but was not in danger of sinking.

The shipping lane where the collision occurred is a congested one, with about 400 vessels passing through each day, the Japanese coast guard said. There are seven Sailors unaccounted for; the ship and the Japanese Coast Guard continues to search for them.

Nippon Yusen K.K., the Japanese company operating the merchant vessel, said the 20 member Filipino crew aboard the ship was safe.

The Fitzgerald is salvageable, he said, but repairs will likely take months.

The coast guard questioned crew members of the ACX Crystal, and is treating the incident as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.
