Castile Protesters Target City where Officer Worked

Mr Castile had informed Officer Yanez just seconds before he was shot that he was carrying a gun.

Friday's acquittal of that officer caused massive riots throughout parts of Minnesota. "He made a terrible mistake", Choi said after the verdict, referring to the officer. His death was broadcast live to Facebook by his girlfriend who was also in the vehicle.

Yanez, who is Latino, was acquitted of manslaughter on Friday. He then fired seven shots, of which five hit Castile.

In addition to the second-degree manslaughter charge, Yanez was also acquitted of two lesser charges of endangering the safety of Castile's girlfriend and young daughter, who were in the auto when Castile was shot and killed.

Reynolds testified that she began recording the shooting's aftermath because she feared for her life and wanted to make sure the truth was known. The widely shared video draws protesters to the scene. Castile's family cursed and stormed from the courtroom and citizens flocked by the hundreds to the state Capitol to vent their anger. Prosecutors said Castile's last words were, "I wasn't reaching for it". Prosecutor John Choi said the acquittal was painful, but that the verdict "must be respected".

Minnesota State Patrol officers arrest protesters during a gathering after the verdict. Despite the acquittal, the city of St. Anthony announced that Yanez would be dismissed.

September 28: The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says it has completed its investigation and turned over its findings to Choi.

December 23: Defense attorneys remove the first judge assigned to oversee Yanez's case, Judge Edward Wilson. Afterward, one of his attorneys, Tom Kelly, said the defence was “satisfied.”. The requests are automatically granted.

During the trial, jurors heard testimony from both sides.

The evidence included squad auto video, but its wide view didnt capture exactly what happened inside the vehicle — leaving jurors to essentially decide whether they believed Yanez when he said Castile had his hand on the gun. Hundreds blocked the I-94 freeway past year after Castile's death was first reported. Large-scale protests in Minnesota and beyond followed in 2016. It played a prominent role in last-minute budget negotiations but did not pass. Yanez shot him, claiming he feared Castile was reaching for his gun. Castile was said to have told Yanez he was armed and had a permit to carry.

She says those arrested were booked at Ramsey County Jail on charges including being a pedestrian on the busy freeway. Defence attorneys pointed to inconsistencies in several of her statements.

May 30: Jury selection begins in Yanez's trial. Eventually, the two unconvinced came to agree to acquit Yanez.
