Steve Scalise condition improves after surgery

Rep. Steve Scalise, the congressman wounded this week by a left-wing zealot gunman, is now in serious condition and is showing signs of improvement, doctors said in an update Saturday afternoon released by the congressman's office.

Scalise, 51, had another surgery on Saturday and "he is more responsive and is speaking with his loved ones", a statement posted to his Twitter account said.

The majority whip was shot during a congressional baseball practice in what's being described as a politically motivated assassination attempt.

But Scalise, who has had two surgeries, will need additional operations and will be in the hospital for "a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", Sava said.

Hamilton takes Canadian pole, given Senna helmet
With the win, Hamilton cut Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel's lead to just 12 points after starting the race 25 points behind. Grosjean suffered damage to his car's nose and thus limped back into the pits for a replacement.

Scalise can hope to make an "excellent recovery", his trauma surgeon told the Associated Press on Friday. The congressman remains in critical condition at the hospital's trauma center.

Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against USA president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise's security detail and other police officers.

The doctor said U.S. Capitol Police Special Agent Crystal Griner, who was also wounded in the shooting, "sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle, and remains hospitalized in good condition".

He had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three politicians, according to a person familiar with the case.

London's transport authority said on Twitter that the Seven Sisters road had been closed due to an "emergency services incident". The incident comes at a time when emotions are high in England, where there have been several recent terrorist attacks.

Officials also said Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, had pictures of the ballpark on his cellphone, and had been spending time at a YMCA center beside the ballpark for several weeks - using his laptop in the lobby for hours, the Times reported.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

President Donald Trump said Friday that Steve Scalise "took a bullet for all of us".

Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said Thursday that shooter James Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers.
