Trump admits he is under investigation in Russia probe

Until Trump's Friday-morning Twitter burst, only the Washington Post's sources had indicated that Trump was being investigated for possible obstruction of justice.

The news comes as the Justice Department continues its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and the Trump administration's potential ties to Russia. But later, Trump said in an interview that he would have fired Comey "regardless" of Rosenstein's recommendation.

It is not clear, however, if Trump was referring in Friday's tweet to Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who wrote a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions recommending that the president fire Comey.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is also investigating the ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, said she was "increasingly concerned" Trump would try to fire not only Mueller, but also the man who appointed him, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. In the interview, the president said he was thinking of "this Russian Federation thing" when he chose to dismiss Comey.

It's yet another tweet that's unleashed intense media speculation... a presidential post of less than 140 characters. ABC said Rosenstein told Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand she would have authority over the probe if he were to step aside.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May, and that firing is now reportedly part of an investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice as president. "[Rosenstein] still makes the final decisions about resources, personnel, and - if necessary - any prosecutions", ABC News notes.

"In order to try to attempt to raise a legitimate scenario to fire Mueller, Trump has to discredit him", attorney Jeffrey Jacobovitz, who represented some Clinton-era White House officials, told the Post.

On Thursday night, Rosenstein issued a statement imploring Americans to "exercise caution" when reading stories citing anonymous "officials".

Report Corroborates Sekulow: No Investigation Of Trump
You could nearly hear the groan coming from anti-Trump liberals who were so looking forward to the coming impeachment trial. A White House spokeswoman referred all questions to Trump's outside lawyer, who made no on-the-record statements.

President Donald Trump confirmed Friday he was under investigation and appeared to take aim at a senior Justice Department official, in a tweet that seemed to encapsulate his frustration with the ongoing focus on Russia's involvement in the 2016 election.

Mr Trump's tweets came after the top lawyer for his transition team warned the organisation's officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe. He said that "Donald Trump was not afraid of the investigation - there was no investigation" and defended Trump's tweet in question saying that "Donald Trump is responding to what he's seeing in the media in a way in which he thinks is appropriate to talk to those people that put him in office".

Trump has denied making these comments, which Comey said he documented in contemporaneous memos.

Mueller met Wednesday with the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee in an effort to ensure their investigations don't conflict.
