Trump lawyer: President not under investigation in Russia probe

In his latest series of tweets, the U.S. President Donald Trump says he is now under investigation for firing former FBI Director James Comey, appearing to accuse the deputy attorney general of launching a "witch hunt" against him.

It was not clear whether the president was basing his tweet on direct knowledge, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether he obstructed justice by firing Mr Comey last month amid the Russian Federation investigation.

"The president is not under investigation by the special counsel", Sekulow told NBC's Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press".

"That tweet was in response to a Washington Post story that ran with five unnamed sources without identifying the agencies they represented, saying that the special counsel had broadened out his investigation to include the president".

"The president is not under investigation by the special counsel", said Sekulow.

The attorney explained that the tweet the president sent in which he said he was under investigation was in response to a Washington Times story that said he was.

"He's not afraid of the investigation - there is no investigation", Sekulow said, adding, "there is not an investigation of the President of the United States, period".

Schiff also said he believes recent congressional testimony from Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions points to signs of possible obstruction by Trump that warrant further investigation.

MrTrump's anger has highlighted the difficulty his legal team and advisers face in stopping the President from weighing in on an active investigation.

"The president can not be investigated, or certainly can not be found liable for engaging in an activity he clearly has power to do under the Constitution", Sekulow said, referencing the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

Trump's lawyer is both claiming that the investigation is bogus, and that there is no investigation in the same answer.

Trump had earlier fired Flynn in February after just 24 days on the job after learning he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"What's happening here is the president wants to take down Bob Mueller", Mr. Schiff said.

Both Coats and Rogers declined before the Senate intelligence committee earlier this month to answer questions about their conversations with Trump, but both said they had never felt urged by Trump to intervene in the Russian Federation probes. "I don't believe it's going to happen".

"Well I think there is evidence", Rep. Adam Schiff said Sunday on ABC's "This Week".

In a two-part tweet posted before 7 a.m. Sunday, Trump wrote: "The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".

Sekulow responded that Trump couldn't be indicted "because there's not an investigation".

Trump has told associates he has the legal authority to fire Mueller, though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing.
