Trump not under investigation, his lawyer insists

Attorney Jay Sekulow told NBC and CNN in interviews that Trump "is not under investigation by the special counsel", Robert Mueller, although Trump said Friday that Mueller is investigating him.

His comments appeared to directly contradict Mr Trump's own tweet this week, in which he appeared to refer to deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein when he wrote: "I'm being investigated for firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director by the man who told me to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director".

Despite Trump's tweets to the contrary, the Florida Republican said that Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential collusion with members of Trump's orbit is fair.

"Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately", Rosenstein said.

Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, said the president was only referring to a news report.

Mueller, the special counsel named by the Justice Department to probe the Russia matter, is investigating whether anyone associated with Trump or his campaign had any illegal dealings with Russian officials or others with ties to the Kremlin. The expansion of the original investigation occurred after the president fired Mueller's successor at the FBI, James Comey.

"No, the president wasn't, it was 141 characters, there's a limitation on Twitter, as we all know" Sekulow stutters.

The department would not comment on the record on whether Trump, who has repeatedly complained about leaks on the case, requested the statement.

Several White House officials and Trump associates insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the president's views of the unfolding investigation.

"Oh, I was gonna fire regardless of recommendation", President Donald Trump said. Trump likely will become more unhinged as headlines dog him day after day, a parade of witnesses troop in to talk to the special counsel and the investigation metastasizes.

Multiple people have said the president has grown agitated with Rosenstein over the past week, increasing speculation that he may want to fire the deputy attorney general. But is he right that Trump would be removed from office if he fires Mueller? Indeed, I preferred nearly every candidate in the Republican presidential primary field to Trump.

While aides have advised Trump to stay off Twitter, the president continued to weigh in Sunday as he spent the weekend at Camp David, the government-owned presidential retreat in Maryland.

Trump referred to the "witch hunt" again in a series of tweets Sunday, saying in one missive that "the MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".
