Trump still angry over Russia probe

While the Republican Trump administration initially said Rosenstein's letter was the reason the president fired Comey on May 9, Trump later said he did so because of the "Russia thing". Rosenstein appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to directly oversee the probe.

The memos - first cited by the New York Times last month - said Trump told Comey in February to end the bureau's investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's Russian Federation connections.

Rosenstein has defended Mueller and said he wouldn't fire him without good cause.

Those matters include whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation and whether any crimes were committed.

Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, also has retained an attorney to represent him. He has already been subpoenaed by the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee.

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", she said.

Feinstein said an angry Trump has "embarked on an effort to undermine anyone with the ability to bring any misdeeds to light", and the Senate shouldn't let that happen.

The memo sent Thursday asks for records related to foreign travel, contacts with Russian "officials, agents or nationals" and background investigations into the top Trump associates now targeted by Mueller's probe.

The order from the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government.

The memo identifies several Trump officials and advisers whose records are of particular interest in the probe. The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations.

The director said that West's ability to bring light into a traditionally dark character was how "true heroes spoke". Other tributes on Twitter came from Mark Hamil, Conan O'Brien, Will Arnett, LeVar Burton, and many others.

"[Vice President] Mike Pence hired a lawyer, everybody else is hiring a lawyer".

The future of Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, came under doubt Friday when Trump attacked him in a tweet and a United States official confirmed that Rosenstein has told colleagues he may have to recuse himself from the inquiry because he'd criticised James Comey in a memo before Trump fired the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director. It wasn't clear whether he was basing his tweet on direct knowledge or on media reports.

The President tweeted on Friday morning that he was "being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!".

The investigation expanded this week and now includes possible obstruction of justice by the president as well as possible financial crimes by Trump associates. Trump may not be able to swing public opinion in his favor as Clinton did with Starr, but he can survive Twitter counterattacks against Comey and even Mueller.

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations - under investigation both by Congress and the FBI - that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favour, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.
