Ronaldo strikes as Portugal down Russia at Confederations Cup

Mexico's football federation (FMF) has appealed to its fans at the Confederations Cup in Russia to stop a long-used chant which soccer's governing body FIFA says is homophobic.

Tuesday was a classic callback to that tournament, as Portugal beat Russian Federation 1-0 in a relatively tiresome game, with Ronaldo scoring the victor. However, the win was bittersweet as Portugal left-back Raphael Guerreiro was hospitalized with a suspected leg fracture. They need everyone to pull their own weight and to play as one collective against a strong Portugal side containing Ronaldo.

Defender Georgy Dzhikiya headed narrowly over the bar from the game's final corner in added time.

A day after Ronaldo was summoned to court in Spain over allegations relating to a complex tax fraud, his goal was simple.

Only a superb one-handed reflex save from Akinfeev, who made his 100th global appearance, stopped Andre Silva's bullet header just after the break.

Saudi Arabia was joined by Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates earlier this month in severing relations with Qata. Both countries have been engaged in proxy wars in Syria, Yemen and support for oppositions in respective countries.

Ronaldo took no questions from the media and did not comment on his legal issues.

Mexico has scored twice in a busy second-half performance to overcome New Zealand 2-1 and destroy the All Whites' dreams of securing their first Confederations Cup victory at the 11th attempt. "He's a top quality player and, personally, this might have an impact on his new season as well".

The player warned: "We know the chant is not about offending anyone, but there are people that see it like that and we could be affected".

Santos praised his team for their dedication under pressure to hold on to the lead. The two teams are unquestionably the power teams in Group B and, with this being a clash of the World Cup champions and Copa America champions, it should be a treat.

"The game doesn't always go how we want", Russian Federation manager Stanislav Cherchesov told reporters.

Floyd Mayweather to fight Conor McGregor in boxing match in August
Boxer Floyd Mayweather and mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor have confirmed they will fight in Las Vegas on 26 August. The bout will take place under normal boxing rules, despite Conor McGregor never having boxed as an amateur or professional.

Ronaldo leapt high to plant an eighth-minute header past Igor Akinfeev and win it for the European champions, who, along with Mexico, are now in pole position to make the last four from Group A. Portugal's first goal was accepted and later on rejected after the video assistant referees had reviewed it.

Captain Akinfeev kept his side in it when he clawed away Silva's 50th-minute header from close range, and he was in the right place at the right time to repel Cedric Soares long-range effort nine minutes later.

In a must-win situation for the Mexican team, they achieved their main objective, which was to gain at least three points in order to qualify for the knockout round of the tournament.

"New Zealand will be a different team compared to Portugal, but they are a hard team to beat", Osorio said at a press conference.
