Iran's Khamenei Reportedly Ordered Missile Strikes on IS Targets in Syria

Only one of the seven missiles landed in Deir ez-Zor while another landed 700 yards away in the city of Mayadin. It was "a flop", said Yaari. "A failure." Still, he added dryly, "it photographed well".

"If we decide to target a location with missiles, this decision falls within the field of national security", said Rouhani. He said there were no casualties from the strikes.

Back on Sunday night, Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) fired six mid-range missiles from its bases in western Iran to target ISIS positions in eastern Syria. However, an IDF source dismissed the claim, telling Haaretz that the attacks were "a great deal less impressive than the media noise being made in Iran around the launch".

The strike was seen as a threatening message to Iran's rivals in the region and elsewhere. Iran's firing of rockets over sovereign borders, instead of relying on military assets it already has inside Syria, also raised questions about its motivations - whether it was trying to send a message about its capabilities and boldness to the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia as well as to ISIS.

Finally, in both the MEK and ISIS cases, Iran fired missiles on a weaker enemy to "teach a lesson" when it believed they had crossed some lines in confronting Iran deep in its territory.

Khamenei said the USA forces should not be allowed to enter Iraq "under the pretext of training (Iraqi forces) or other issues", quoted Tehran Times daily.

The development comes as tensions rise in Syria with Russian Federation and Iran sending USA warnings. The statement also promised more retribution attacks should Iran fall victim to any more terror attacks.

Iran's recent strike on the Islamic State was also a signal to the US that the country's missile program will not be deterred by sanctions, according to Iranian parliamentarians.

Six medium-range ballistic missiles were launched on the extremist group's bases in Dayr al-Zawr and according to spokesman Bahram Qassemi of the foreign ministry, they were "fatal blows" which served as "just a wake-up warning to those who still can not or have not managed to decently comprehend the realities of the region and their own limits".

Currently, Washington has only blacklisted the Guards' foreign operations arm - the Quds Force - and some individual commanders.

Sharif also warned that such attacks would be repeated if the extremists take action against Iran's security.

Just after the attacks, the IRGC said it would get revenge on the terrorists, as well as its supporters and affiliates.

Activists in Syria said they had no immediate information on damage or casualties from the strikes.
