Tropical Storm Cindy makes landfall with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph

Tropical Storm Cindy made landfall in southwestern Louisiana early Thursday morning and severe weather will continue to be a threat for folks along the Gulf shore throughout the day.

As of the NHC's latest update at 11 a.m. EDT, Cindy has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and is about 165 miles northwest of Morgan City, La., moving north at a speed of 13 mph. Tropical Storm Cindy sent drenching rain bands over the north Gulf Coast on Wednesday, swamping low-lying coastal roads and pushing a waterspout ashore in one beachfront community as residents from east Texas to the Florida Panhandle warily eyed the storm's slow crawl toward land.

Roads stayed wet in counties north of I-20 during much of the day Thursday, as Cindy was downgraded from a tropical story to a tropical depression.

Life-threatening flash floods are possible and rivers could break their banks causing further flooding.

Tornado watches are in effect for Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle.
