A weakening Cindy heads inland, spreading rain far and wide

Cindy weakened into a tropical depression after it made landfall in Louisiana but it still packed a punch, bringing heavy rain, flooding and at least one suspected tornado to the Gulf Coast states.

Tropical Storm Cindy made landfall in southwestern Louisiana Thursday morning.

Cindy is just the second tropical storm to form in the Atlantic since the hurricane season officially began on June 1.

National Weather Service forecasters estimated the storm had dumped anywhere from 2 to 10 inches (50 to 250 millimeters) of rain on various spots along the Gulf Coast from southern Louisiana to the Florida panhandle as of Wednesday.

Up to 2 inches of heavy rain is possible in Lancaster County today as Tropical Depression Cindy forges a path across the southeastern United States, meteorologists said Thursday.

As of 7 a.m. CDT, Cindy is centered about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and is moving north near 12 mph (19 kph). National Weather Service officials said remnants continue to move northward with winds about 10 to 15 miles per hour.

Forecasters are warning of a worrisome flood threat on a southeast MS river following heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Depression Cindy. Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy said there were no injuries but fences, trees and power lines were damaged. But meteorologists said it's hard to predict exactly what areas might be hit by repeated bands of heavy rain or how much will accumulate.

The storm's only reported fatality occurred on Wednesday, when a 10-year-old boy was struck by a log dislodged by a large wave as he stood near the shore in Fort Morgan, Alabama, the Baldwin County coroner said. There's a possibility for flooding, strong winds and isolated tornadoes.
