Manchester United boss Mourinho accused of tax fraud in Spain

According to Diario Gol, the Brazilian, who has previously stated that it would be great to see Ronaldo playing for Barcelona, sent the Portugal captain a message of support amid the recent tax fraud storm.

The Manchester United boss follows Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar to have been called before the courts.

"Therefore, any statements or value judgements made by the cited publication in regard to this false information lack any basis and have no other objective than to damage the image of Real Madrid and its president, just as is becoming the norm for this particular media outlet".

He has been summoned to testify on July 31 in a case in which he is accused of hiding income from tax authorities.

In a statement released to ESPN FC, Madrid's regional state prosecutor accused Mourinho of evading tax totalling €3.3m from his 2011 and 2012 declarations - €1.61m in 2011 and €1.69m in 2012 - while on the books of Real Madrid.

"To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted Jose Mourinho or his advisers who were hired for the inspection process", a statement on the Gestifute website reads.

It will be up to a judge to decide whether to take Mourinho to court.

News broke earlier today suggesting that the Manchester United manager is alleged to have defrauded the Spanish tax authorities of around €3.3m (£2.91m) across 2011 and 2012 during his time in charge of Real Madrid.

The prosecutor said Ronaldo used shell company in the Virgin Islands to cheat on his taxes. Ronaldo is due to appear in court on July 31.

Messi and his father were given 21-month sentences for three counts of tax fraud but did not go to prison, while Mascherano was given a one-year sentence for tax evasion.

The prison term will be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years.
