Alabama base on lockdown after possible active shooter report

Reports are surfacing concerning the possibility of an active shooter at Redstone Arsenal, a U.S. Army post near Hunstville, Alabama. Installation is locked down.

The post reads: "Possible active shooter on the Arsenal". We will update with more information as it comes in.

Redstone Arsenal spokesperson Christopher Colster told AL.com that he was not aware of any reported injuries but that the location of the incident has not been determined.

"In one of our buildings this morning there were reports of an active shooter".

An email reportedly sent to employees at 10.31am local time said: "This is a real world event, which is not part of the exercise".

"The facility is under lockdown and all gates are closed. Run hide fight", @TeamREDSTONE said. All installation gates are closed until further notice.

The base is close to Nasa's Marshall Space Flight Center, which has also been placed on lockdown.

The message asked for people to avoid the area.

The base said on its Facebook page Monday that it would be conducting an active shooter training exercise this week.
