How The 76ers Trade Is Going To Affect The NBA Draft

The trade that has sent shockwaves through the National Basketball Association all weekend - Philadelphia acquires Boston's No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's draft in exchange for the No. 3 and a future first-rounder - became official Monday, signaling the 76ers are serious about winning now and the Celtics are planning ... something.

Lakers looking to add another first-round draft pick, sources say: ESPN: Los Angeles now holds the second and 28th picks in this year's draft. If things go the wrong way for Boston in the 2018 and 2019 lotteries, this could become a really bad deal, but most likely, the Celtics will receive a pair of top five picks for their No. 1 this year and it will be considered a fair trade.

However, Celtics president Danny Ainge still believes they will get the player they would have selected at number one.

The Celtics sent that pick to the Sixers for the No. 3 pick and protected 2018 Los Angeles Lakers first-rounder, which the Sixers possessed. While Fultz is clearly a talented player, the Celtics already are very deep at the point guard position.

Philadelphia moved up in the 2017 NBA Draft to get the No. 1 pick, where Fultz is the obvious lead candidate.

Many around the National Basketball Association believe the Celtics could be gearing up for a big trade that could land them a superstar before they even go into free agency with cap space.

According to ESPN, Ainge said that the trade with Philly was the best offer that Boston received "by a significant margin".

"This is certainly a trade that is under the microscope more than other trades, but we're not afraid of that". In 2016, the Sixers picked Ben Simmons, who didn't play at all during the season after breaking a bone in his foot. That's when the Orlando Magic traded the No. 1 pick to the Golden State Warriors for the No. 3 pick and three future first-rounders.

The Celtics already have a point guard in Isaiah Thomas, so it's not insane to imagine that they'll be looking to fill another position on their roster with the pick. But Al Jefferson and Avery Bradley were both solid picks late in the first round, and Jaylen Brown seems like a fine player.

The Sixers are fully expected to take Washington guard Markelle Fultz with the top pick.

While owner Dan Gilbert values Griffin and his leadership, the billionaire businessman is hands-on with his basketball team and has shown a willingness to keep his line of executives moving. Instead of cashing in, they're somehow still stockpiling, with legitimate stars in Paul George and Jimmy Butler - and Carmelo Anthony - dangling on the trade market.
