Modi, Trump vow to fight terrorism
Washington D.C. [United States], June 27: United States President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have pledged to deepen defense and security cooperation, building on the United States' recognition of India as a major defense partner.
Modi effusively praised Trump, hailing his "vast and successful experience in the business world" and "great leadership" for US-India ties, which he said should "lend an aggressive and forward looking agenda to our relations".
India's leader is in the U.S. for his first meeting with President Donald Trump, seeking to build on growing ties between the world's two largest democracies and move beyond disagreements over climate change. Both leaders warmly shook hands and smiled in what was their first ever meeting.
"Fighting against terrorism and destroying the hideouts of the terrorists will be an important part of our mutual cooperation", PM Modi said while jointly addressing the media with Trump following delegation-level talks. President Trump reaffirmed the support of the United States for India's permanent membership on a reformed U.N. Security Council.
The statement from Trump went a long distance to dispel doubts that the relationship was floundering or drifting. This is also the first time Trump hosted a working dinner for a foreign dignitary at the White House. Leading US Congressmen had asked Trump to press Modi to remove barriers on trade and investment during their meeting.
This was the only note of dissonance in the love fest that unfolded Monday in the White House.
SCOTUS Will Hear Baker's Refusal to Bake Gay Wedding Cake
ADF General Counsel Michael Farris echoed those sentiments, saying it was likely the court would start hearings in the late fall. A baker says a law requiring him to make cakes for same-sex marriages amounts to taking his artistic freedom .
His reference was to Spice Jet's recently announced plans to buy new planes from Boeing. The US president said that ties between India and US have never been stronger and better.
Defeating terrorism, where a near complete convergence of views was expected, was a key point for bonding.
The US side showed up in strength and most of the top cabinet members were seated in the front row led by Vice President Mike Pence and First Lady Melania Trump. Trump welcomed the parting gesture, patting Modi kindly on the back.
Trump and Modi also called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries.
The prime minister, returning the favour with equally flowery language, said that this journey and the discussions would be one of the "most important pages" in the history of bilateral cooperation.
India is among the nations singled out by the Trump administration for their trade surpluses with the USA, and it is also reviewing a visa program used heavily by skilled Indian workers.
Mike D'Antoni named NBA Coach of the Year
Prior to that, he won more than 500 games over a 30-year period as the head coach at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, S.C. For months, there had been debates among sports analysts, journalists, and fans as to which player was most deserving.
Modi's speech said the strategic partnership would reach "new heights" and the drivers would be productivity, growth, job creation and breakthrough technologies.
He added that the two nations noted that in their joint statement that terrorism is a global scourge that must be fought in every part of the world, and the U.S. and India would do it together. "Similarly, India's development and its increasing role on the world stage is good for America", he said.
The two leaders steered clear from commenting on the H-1B visa and immigration matter, which has kept thousands of Indian employees in the United States on the edge. "That's something I will always remember through my life", said Modi in Hindi. I thank him for the welcome.
Trump pointed out that he had been "reading about [Modi]". "You have done a great job".
"We consider the United States as our primary partner in India's socio-economic transformation in all our flagship programs and schemes", he added. "I would like to congratulate you", the US President said. "And that is now exactly what you have - a true friend", he said.
"If the chemistry is good, everything else gets sorted", said an Indian official.
