NYC subway train derailed, passengers evacuated

Passengers aboard a crowded southbound A train reported that the train had come off the tracks on Tuesday morning and crashed into a wall between 135th street and 125th Street in northern Manhattan. It said there was smoke but no fire.

Passengers described the train vibrating wildly and bucking as it went off the rails.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed that a train derailed and seven people suffered from non-life-threatening injuries.

Six people are believed to have been injured in the accident in Harlem, New York which took place at 9.45am local time. He said there was white smoke and "there was a lot of banging around in that vehicle - it was really bad".

A, C and D trains are holding in stations in both directions. Emergency crews shut off track power after derailments to prevent evacuees from being electrocuted.

One rider says the A train broke down and "caught fire" at 125th Street. He said the station wasn't smoky but there was a strong, acrid smell.

New York City's subway system, which carries 5.7 million riders on a typical weekday, has come under increasing criticism in recent months for extensive delays and infrastructure in poor condition. In April, a power outage backed up trains around New York City and closed a key Manhattan station for 12 hours.
