In a letter sent June 28, Justice Department officials requested data on how states purge registrations of people who have died or moved.

A Democratic member of President Donald Trump's commission on voter fraud and election integrity says he wants to see the panel "refine" its search.

"EPIC seeks to halt this important work with meritless claims and a baseless fear about the states voluntarily submitting publicly available voter data to the federal government", says a court filing from the commission.

A DOJ spokesman said in a statement that the department sent the letters because it hasn't reviewed what states and localities are doing to maintain their voting lists under the NVRA for many years and "looks forward to working with state and local election officials to facilitate appropriate list-maintenance activities toward our common goal of free and fair elections for all voters".

"We use paper ballots, so Russian hacking really can't reach to the level of an ink pen, but I know there are questions about that around the country and having those discussions, I think, is valuable, especially in terms of how it could infiltrate the voter lists that we've been asked to look at".

The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a Freedom of Information Act request in response to the letter, raising concerns about the breadth of the DOJ request.
