US Bombers Conduct Live Fire Drill Over Korean Peninsula

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said the bombers then flew west, hugging the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) border between the two Koreas, before leaving South Korean airspace.

Four US and South Korean jet fighters joined the live fire drill, which was conducted at a range in Yeongwol County, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the inter-Korean border, the South's air force said.

Ballistic missile test

The South Korean Air Force said a pair of B-1B Lancers were sent from the U.S. Anderson Air Base in Guam, to fly over the peninsula for precision-strike training.

'North Korea's actions are a threat to our allies, p artners and homeland, ' said US Air Force General Terrence O'Shaughnessy in the statement.

The drill simulated the two USA bombers destroying enemy ballistic missile batteries and South Korean jets mounting precision strikes against underground enemy command posts, the South's air force said.

Despite the sabre-rattling, the United States and South Korea have said they are committed to resolving the crisis over the North's pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile peacefully. Military authorities say the deployment serves as a warning to North Korea following its recent long-range missile launch, a missile that's speculated to be an ICBM.
