This year's Emmy nominations played out as expected

Earlier today, the nominees for the 2017 Emmy Awards have been announced, and Game of Thrones was missing, but why? HBO, which has been available over-the-top since 2015 via HBO NOW, leads all networks with a total of 110 nominations, and Netflix is close behind, with a total of 91 nominations. "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Westworld" are in competition with each other - and a high-quality pack that includes "The Crown" (which details Queen Elizabeth II's own encounters with sexism), "Stranger Things" (which features an alien girl who escaped her oppressors), "House of Cards" (which features a ruthless woman president), "Better Call Saul" and "This is Us". The comedy contenders include ABC's "black-ish", Netflix's "Master of None" and FX's "Atlanta".

HBO is on the map for limited series, too, with "Big Little Lies" and "The Night of", as well as for its TV movies "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", and "Wizard of Lies". Netflix's entry in this latter category is "Black Mirror".

"Game of Thrones" made television history previous year, becoming the most decorated fictional show since the awards began almost seven decades ago with nine awards in technical categories and three top prizes. This year it has many strong chances to do so, with 18 total Emmy nods. The company is nearly doubling its nomination count every year, but it's also producing a mind-boggling 600 hours of content and spending $6 billion a year to do so.

That also means Hulu is actually ahead of Amazon, which has 16 nominations - the same as a year ago. "You saw Samantha Bee get her first nomination".
