The e-mails show that - though the lawyer (Natalia Veselnitskaya) whom Trump, Jr. met with was not actually involved in government service and seems to have set the meeting up under false pretenses to talk to Trump Jr. about laws related to US citizens adopting Russian children - Trump, Jr. believed he was meeting a "Russian government attorney" who was associated with the "Crown prosecutor of Russia".

The closed session is part of the panel's investigation into Russian interference in the election and possible connections to Trump's campaign.

The meeting was "not substantive", Mr. Akhmetshin said.

Akhmetshin has been reported to have ties to Russian intelligence, a characterization he dismisses as a "smear campaign".

Investigations by Congress and the U.S. Justice Department are focusing attention on whether the president's team helped Russian operatives find voting districts in key states in which unexpected campaign weaknesses were discovered. Days later, on June 9, 2016, Trump Jr. met with the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, at Trump Tower in NY. Expressing his frustration over the "waste of time" meeting, Trump, Jr. called it a "nothing".

The Trump, Jr. e-mails show that narrative is completely bogus.

Ellis argued that Farmer's molestation of the dead cat was sexually motivated but Schroeder proffered other theories. He was caged after docs considered him a danger to the community who could go after larger animals in the future.

Almost six months later, on June 7, 2016, Donald Trump Jr. received an email from publicist Rob Goldstone that said, "The Russian government attorney who is flying over from Moscow for this Thursday", June 9, when Veselnitskaya met with Trump Jr., Manafort and Kushner in Trump Tower. Also in the room were Jared Kushner, the then-candidate's son-in-law, who is now a top White House official, and Paul Manafort, the campaign chairman at the time. Veselnitskaya's application for a visa to travel to the U.S.to work on the case was denied, she said in a later court filing. When arranging the meeting, music promoter and Trump family acquaintance Rob Goldstonereferred to a "Russian government attorney".

Trump Jr. has dismissed the meeting as "a nothing" that led "nowhere".

Donald Trump's eldest son Don Jr may be in the media spotlight over his notorious Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton.

Kushner disclosed the meeting on his security clearance paperwork, but Schiff said the Akhmetshin revelation raises questions about how much Kushner disclosed about it.

Trump Jr. (and presumably Kushner and Manafort, too) already knew that Vladimir Putin's regime wanted Donald Trump to win the presidency and was willing to help. He said he was drafted into the Soviet army and served from 1986 to 1988 but was not trained in spy tradecraft.

In an interview with NBC News this week, Veselnitskaya specifically addressed ― then ruled out ― any possibility that she provided Trump Jr. with records about DNC finances. And is accused of being an unregistered foreign agent.

Today, a new name emerged, Rinat Akhmetshin, a Russian-born Washington lobbyist and Soviet army veteran.

While Veselnitskaya was lobbying to undermine and repeal the Magnitsky Act, Grassley notes that Fusion GPS and others "were involved in the pro-Russia campaign in 2016, which involved lobbying congressional staffers to attempt to undermine the Justice Department's account of Magnitsky's death and the crime he uncovered, repeal the Magnitsky Act itself, and delay efforts to expand it to countries beyond Russian Federation".

A former Trump campaign official says he has told the House Intelligence Committee that he "never heard the word Russia" during his time on President Donald Trump's campaign.
