Australian woman Justine Damond killed in police shooting in Minneapolis

Mayor Betsy Hodges says she's "heartsick" and "deeply disturbed" by what occurred.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed that an officer had fired a weapon, fatally striking a woman. Why wasn't the shooting captured on squad cameras?

Justine Damond, previously known as Justine Ruszczyk, was shot through the door of a squad vehicle after she had gone outside in her pyjamas, it is claimed. The BCA has been, and continues to be, in the lead investigating this officer-involved shooting incident.

Originally from Sydney, Ms Damond was engaged to an American man, and had reportedly called police after hearing a noise near her house.

Describing his stepmother as his "best friend" and "a very passionate woman", Zach said she called police because she "thought something bad was happening".

City officials say the investigation is in its early stages and more information will be available in the days to come.

According to local Australian news, the woman - identified as Justine Damond from Sydney - was in her pajamas when she approached a responding police vehicle in an alley behind her home in Minneapolis's Fulton neighborhood.

"We are so sad to report the tragic shooting of Justine Damond", the community's post said. "My heart goes out to everyone in the community, especially the family of the woman that was shot".

"My mom is dead because the police officer shot her for reasons I don't know and I demand answers", he said.

"I'm so done with all this violence, it's so much bulls-t".

The site's bio for Justine also claimed she "is a qualified yoga instructor, a personal health & life coach (EFT, Theta and Re-connective Healing practitioner) and meditation teacher".

Local news outlets report that one of her students said Ruszczyk often talked about how she preferred the tough gun laws in Australia compared to the gun culture in America. "I want to know more".

Ms. Damond conducted meditation workshops at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community, which posted a tribute to her on its Facebook page.

But the BCA offered few other details on what precipitated the shooting and, it said, neither responding officer had turned on their body cameras before the shooting.

Investigators are searching for any footage of the shooting.

"She was treasured and loved, and we will really miss her", she said.

Since 2016, Minneapolis has required all officers to wear and activate their body cameras "at all times when they could reasonably anticipate that they may become involved in a situation for which activation is appropriate", before any contact with a citizen.
