Flash floods grip Odisha's Rayagada and Kalahandi, one die in landslide

With heavy rains triggering flash floods in parts of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts, the Odisha government on Sunday sought the help of the army and the air force to rescue the marooned persons and urged the Centre to provide four helicopters to intensify relief and rescue operations. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has reviewed the situation and has held a meeting to chart out the strategy to provide relief to affected people.

He said two bridges had been washed away causing disruption of road connections, while a railway bridge was also damaged disrupting train services.

"No effort will be spared to ensure the safety of the people", the Chief Minister said. He directed development commissioner and special relief commissioner to supervise the rescue and relief operations in affected areas. "Four helicopters have been requisitioned", said a defence official.

While Thuamul-Rampur area of Kalahandi received 260 mm rainfall in past 24 hours, Rayagada recorded 189.88 mm rainfall during the same period causing flash flood in Nagabali and Kalyan rivers.

While one person died in Kalahandi district, five bridges were washed away in the floods caused by incessant rains in two districts.

Mr Patnaik said the government had sought the help of Army and pressed the IAF helicopter in the relief and rescue operation as large number of people need to be evacuated from their houses submerged by the flood waters. Major roads were damaged in flood water leading to halt in vehicular movement. Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) and Deputy Inspector General of Police of southern division were also asked to monitor the situation closely.

The state government ordered closure of all schools for the next three to four days while hostels of residential and ashram schools would remain open for students staying there. The water level on the rivers is expected to rise further due to continuous rains since Saturday.
