New IBM Z mainframe takes on encryption

The system boasts tamper-responding encryption keys and encrypted APIs and can help companies comply with with new standards such as the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set to go into effect next year.

But with large volumes of information this can be time consuming and costly.

The 14-generation mainframe, called IBM Z, introduces a new encryption engine that for the first time will allow organizations to encrypt all data in their databases, applications, or cloud services, with no performance hit, said Mike Perera, VP of IBM's z Systems Software unit, in an interview with Data Center Knowledge. IBM Z is also able to run more than 12 billion encrypted transactions a day, according to the company.

The system's advanced cryptographic capability now extends across any data, networks, external devices or entire applications - such as the IBM Cloud Blockchain service - with no application changes and no impact on business service level agreements.

Israel strongly opposes Russia-US agreement on ceasefire in southern Syria
French President Emmanuel Macron calls for new peace talks and a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. Fewer than 100 were to survive the war.

"There is a global epidemic of data theft".

"The vast majority of stolen or leaked data today is in the open and easy to use because encryption has been very hard and expensive to do at scale", said Ross Mauri, General Manager, IBM Z. The capability can be extended to other devices such as storage systems and servers in the cloud. Drawing on 21 years' worth of data about security incidents, the researchers concluded that, "Of the breaches and incursions analyzed, they could reduce the threat surface by 92 percent by having pervasive encryption on IBM Z", said Nick Sardino, IBM's program director for offering management, z Systems Growth Initiatives.

All that said, it's probably going to take more than total encryption for a company to spring for a mainframe unless it's core to their business, according to analyst Roger L. Kay from the firm, Endpoint Technologies Associates, Inc. That means that when data is transferred from one place to another, it isn't in a form that can be easily stolen by malicious hackers.

A Secure Service Container protects is claimed to protect against insider threats from contractors and privileged users, providing automatic data and code encryption in-flight and at-rest, and tamper-resistance during installation and runtime.

Froome regains control as Matthews wins stage 14 of Tour de France
Mikel Landa has been so strong over the last two weeks that there is no doubt he could be a team leader at the Tour de France . Bennett finished 32nd, 6min 25sec behind Dutch stage victor Bauke Mollema, with several of his rivals finishing ahead of him.

Until now, encryption has been largely absent in data and cloud centers - only 2 percent of corporate data is encrypted today - because current solutions dramatically degrade performance, and are too complex and expensive to manage.

IBM Z is created to help clients comply with standards like EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and it is deeply integrated with IBM Security software.

The company outlined three container pricing models for affordable and flexible cloud-based deployments, including for new microservices and applications, application test and development and payment systems. "Enterprise clients also benefit from the ease of use making management transparent to the application and the user".

The industry just gained another ally in the global fight against cybercrime with the launch of the new IBM z14 mainframe.

USA to Impose New Sanctions on Chinese Banks Over North Korea Ties
An interceptor based in Alaska shot down an intermediate-range target launched over the Pacific Ocean north of Hawaii. But Russia isn't the only country employing North Korean laborers - Qatar and China have also joined in the practice.

IBM mainfraes already support 87% of all credit card transactions and almost $8-trillion payments a year, 29-billion ATM transactions each year, worth almost $5-billion per day, 4-billion passenger flights each year; more than 30-billion transactions per day - more than the number of Google searches every day; and 68% of the world's production workloads at only 6% of the total IT cost. It supports 2,000,000 Docker containers and 1,000 concurrent NoSQL databases. There can be up to 32TB of memory, three times the z13 maximum, and its IO is three times faster as well.
