'Oh bother!' - China censors Winnie the Pooh

No official explanation was given, but the FT cited observers who said the crackdown may be related to past comparisons of the physical appearance of President Xi Jinping to the fictional bear.

It is not known for certain that the memes are the reason behind the censorship, but it is suggested by the FT.

Currently, attempts to write "Winnie the Pooh" in China's famous social network Weibo end up with a pop-up warning "illegal content". To many, an image of the Xi walking beside U.S. President Barack Obama bore a resemblance to an image of Winne the Pooh walking beside Tigger. Apart from flashing error messages, Winnie the Pooh stickers have also been removed from WeChat's official sticker gallery. These memes, illustrations and GIFs comparing the China President to slow-witted, good-natured bear are slowly wiped off the internet.

And what was described as the "most censored image of 2015" by political consultancy Global Risk Insights showed another comparison, this time featuring Winnie in a toy vehicle.

The latest Pooh ban appears to be part of a larger tightening of state control in the run up to this fall's Communist Party Congress. Despite the cartoon character courting controversies earlier, censorship on such a scale is witnessed only this time around.
