Arguably Landau's career high point arrived in 1995, when he won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood, the Burton-directed biopic of the infamous director of Plan 9 From Outer Space and other notorious films.

Martin Landau, a star of the 1960s television series "Mission: Impossible" who made a late-career comeback with an Academy Award-winning performance in the 1994 film "Ed Wood", died on Saturday at age 89, his publicist said.

The prolific actor's most notable credits included the "Mission: Impossible" television series, Alfred Hitchcock's classic film "North by Northwest", and his role in "Ed Wood", for which he won an Oscar.

Born on June 20, 1928 in Brooklyn, Landau first worked as a cartoonist for the New York Daily News but later turned down a promotion and then quit in his mid-20s to pursue acting. He also had prominent roles in the first X-Files movie (as a paranoid scientist), Rounders (as a poker-playing law professor), and The Majestic (as a bereaved gold-star father who mistakes amnesiac Jim Carrey for his long-lost son).

After his career rebounded with "Tucker" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors", the meaty roles returned. He received another three Emmy nominations, for his work on "Without a Trace" in 2004 and 2005, and for "Entourage" in 2007. "Mission: Impossible" ran another four years without them.

Landau loved acting more than anything, and felt he had learned so much about it that he wanted to give something back, so he became a teacher himself. "Nobody knew me", he said later.
