The cold front slid southward on Saturday, moving past Williams Lake and 100 Mile House Saturday night.

RCMP Sgt. Annie Linteau said that 5,000 officers are helping out with the wildfire efforts and preparing for evacuation alerts to potentially turn in to orders. "In some cases we did have to withdraw our own personnel from the fire line to ensure their safety", he said. "Volunteers here are trying to look after every small detail, whether it be toiletries or supplies for people's pets".

The inferno's progress prompted authorities to take new emergency measures, ordering the evacuation of 24,000 people in the region including the town of Williams Lake which is home to some 11,000 people, reported public broadcaster CBC.

By the start of the weekend, the one highway running south was jammed with people fleeing the flames. Richmond says there is damage in the area, particularly on some rural properties near Abel Lake Road and Lilypad Lake Road.

Williams Lake had been under an evacuation alert for days before the evacuation order was implemented.

There are numerous offers of accommodation, ranging from a room to full homes.
