Declare state of emergency on education | Malala tells Osinbajo

Founder of the Malala Fund and girls education activist, Malala Yousafzai has asked the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the education sector.

Yousafzai said there was a "positive response" to the suggestion from Osinbajo, who has been standing in for President Muhammadu Buhari since he left on open-ended medical leave in early May.

Malala made the call while answering questions from journalists in the State House after paying a visit to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo in the Presidential Villa.

Nigeria should focus on improving its education system, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai said on Monday during a visit to the West African country where almost half of primary-aged children are not enrolled in school.

She visited Nigeria in July, 2014, to campaign for the release of abducted Chibok schoolgirls, meeting with then President Goodluck Jonathan and parents of the more than 230 kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls. I had a very good response. I highlighted a few issues. The first was to ask the government to declare a state of emergency in education because the education of the Nigerian girls and boys is really important. "We are also happy to hear positive response from the minister as well in ensuring that education is prioritised", she said, adding that spending on education at a federal and state level should be made public.

"They are happy to work more on education".

The Norwegian Nobel Committee noted that despite her youth, Malala fought for the right of girls to education for several years and has shown by example that children and young people can also contribute to improving their own situations.
