Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak Razak (centre) during the second phase launch ceremony of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang line in Kuala Lumpur July 17, 2017.

Beyond connecting Malaysians to their offices and retail therapy outlets, MRT Corp said the MRT SBK line also provides access to over 40 educational institutions ranging from primary schools to universities.

"By 2027, we aim to have a fully integrated public transportation system", he said.

"Based on track record, we (the government) can achieve this objective", he said at the launch of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line second phase at the Tun Razak Exchange underground station in Kuala Lumpur.

The LRT3 is now under construction and scheduled for completion by 2020, while MRT2 is expected to ready by 2022.

Najib pointed out that the project had created 130,000 jobs and 70,000 of those jobs related directly to the building of the line.

Turkey extends state of emergency for three months after coup anniversary
He went on to wish the Turkish government and people more success in addressing the challenges facing the country. According to the Turkish constitution, a state of emergency can be declared for a maximum period of six months.

The Prime Minister said 41 retailers have set up shops in the 31 stations along the SBK line, with more on the way.

This project also could have a positive effect on the environment because 160,000 vehicles in the Klang Valley were expected to be off the roads, thus reducing 752,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission annually.

MRT Corp strategic communications and stakeholder relations director Datuk Najmuddin Abdullah said the MRT project - of which the SBK is the first line - is expected to contribute to increase in value of 1.2 million square feet of real estate, commercial and residential properties.

Commuters could also save money by using the MRT, he said.

The Prime Minister said he had spoken to someone who had used other MRT stations in the world.

"Some people say it could lead to a boom in business among satay sellers in Kajang", Najib quipped, referring to the fact that the Kajang Stadium MRT station is a stone's throw away from the town's popular satay restaurants.

The MRT complements the LRT system, which has 85 stations. The person said we are better than London, New York, or Hong Kong.

"We can experience the significance of world class people's infra facilities and this is not mere talk but has become a reality", he said.

Also present at the launch were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and several Cabinet ministers.

Najib said he felt enormous pride and personal satisfaction over the completion of the MRT project.

"I asked someone recently, to rate our MRT, where do we stand compared to others".
