The leaked emails revealed that Otaiba regularly communicated with a pro-Israel neoconservative think-tank called the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD).

The hacking took place shortly after US President Donald Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia. Kuwait has been serving as a mediator in trying to resolve the current Gulf crisis.

Qatar, the tiny Gulf state being isolated by its neighbours, said the reported involvement of the United Arab Emirates in hacking its government news site in May is "unfortunate" and a breach of agreements among the Gulf countries.
