Wimbledon champion: Roger Federer or Marin Cilic?

Federer trounced seventh seed Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to secure his 19th major crown and move clear of Pete Sampras and William Renshaw at the top of the all-time list of men's Wimbledon champions.

"It was just a feeling I knew I can not give my best on the court, that I can not give my best game, especially at this stage of my career, at such a big match", he said."It was very, very hard to deal with it". "Fluid just came down under my callous in the foot".

"The physios here helped me over the last 30 hours". It wasn't so bad after the match, " Cilic said.

"It's very special but it's borderline odd for me because he will always be my hero".

Marin Cilic has started the Wimbledon final by serving first to Roger Federer.

"I've seen how quickly things can change", Federer said. "It's a tough part when you're in that kind of situation". I'm going, OK, I know he's not going to serve and volley - which is great for me. "It's just actually fighting it through".

Cilic dropped the set 6-1 and called a medical timeout to have his left foot bandaged and take a painkiller.

"It was just a feeling that I knew that I can not give my best on the court, that I can not give my best game and my best tennis, especially at this stage of my career, at such a big match".

Murray and Hingis, who have both previously won the title playing with different partners, were playing their first Grand Slam together. "If I do that, maybe things which I didn't think were possible before, could be possible".

Cilic came into the match one victory from his second major championship.

This is his second Grand Slam title this year after the Australian Open title earlier this year and makes Federer the oldest player with a winning streak, beating the record set by Arthur Ashe, who won a Wimbledon at 32 years.

Federer's willingness to come to net is in contrast to numerous younger up-and-coming players.

The injury, though, made Sunday's match a veritable walkover. But instead of focusing on defending champ Ivo Karlovic and two-time former champs John Isner and Rajeev Ram, the headliners, let's look ahead to, say, 2025, when the greatest player of all time could take his place among the other greats of the game. "But unfortunately it was not meant to be".

The main reason being, Federer believes, just like everybody else who has watched him play these last six months, that he is playing quite possibly the best tennis of his career.

"I really wanted to give my best, " Cilic said, "to try as much as I could".
